Effective and functional infrastructures are essential for connecting a world in constant and rapid evolution. Safety and comfort in the parking lot, be it a supermarket or a shopping center, is one of the essential cornerstones in the development of a company. Thus, timely asphalt repairs can directly contribute to improving the social context and ensuring customer satisfaction.
How to Conduct Asphalt Repairs
The asphalting process of a road depends on various factors, particularly whether the asphalt repair company is building a new road or renovating an existing one. If the work includes the resurfacing of an existing pavement, some processes must be completed before pouring the new asphalt:
-
Milling of the old conglomerate: milling consists of removing the superficial part of the old pavement. It favors the adherence of the new layer to the underlying one and prevents any road surface elevations compared to the previous situation. The milling is carried out with milling machines equipped with rotating cylindrical bodies with cutting tools and a conveyor belt through which the removed material is loaded onto transport vehicles.
-
Garbage and collection of milled material: garbage and collection of milled material is the process that allows the removal of all that material that has yet to be removed directly from the milling machine. This can be done both mechanically, using sweepers, and manually, using brooms and shovels.
-
Hot or cold spraying of bituminous emulsion on the road surface facilitates the adhesion of the new asphalt: the laying surface, if made up of concrete, must be treated by applying bituminous emulsions in order to ensure adequate adhesion between the foundation and the new wear coat. The operation is not necessary if the new wearing course is placed on old layers of the bituminous conglomerate. The bituminous emulsion can be sprayed hot or cold on the road surface, both mechanically, using a special diffuser placed behind a half-tanker, and manually, with a dispenser.
Once the preparation of the road surface has been completed, the asphalt repair company proceeds with the new asphalting. The latter provides:
-
Laying of the bituminous conglomerate and compaction of the bituminous conglomerate: the laying operations consist of the application of several layers of bituminous conglomerate using a paver road machine. The paver finisher is equipped with a front hopper, into which the asphalt trucks load the material directly. Through a sliding movement of the bottom of the hopper, the asphalt passes into a distributor located towards the rear end of the vibratory finisher where the augers are located (which have the function of spreading the mix uniformly over the entire pre-set width). The conglomerate is then spread homogeneously and thickened by suitable leveling devices.
-
The finishing operations: The compaction phase of the bituminous conglomerate, still hot, is carried out using compacting rollers with an operator on board. They have a weight of no less than 2 tons and are equipped with one or more cylindrical bodies. Compaction has the purpose of thickening the layer of conglomerate that has just been laid, making the road surface homogeneous and free of irregularities, preventing any layer from sliding concerning the underlying one, and avoiding the appearance of cracks. A vibrating plate is used to compact the surface at its edges near the sidewalk.
